According to the American Obesity Association, the risk of death in obese people is between 50% and 100% higher than people with an average weight. This means between 300,000 and 587,000 deaths a year, turning obesity into the second highest avoidable cause of death in United States. Obesity is a factor in increased mortality and a number of social and lifestyle disadvantages.
