| GASTRIC BAND: WHAT IS IT FOR AND HOW DOES IT WORK? |
The gastric band is an adjustable and reversible surgical obesity treatment. Its main benefit is that it eliminates many of the risks of other surgical obesity treatments such as gastric derivation or stomach stapling.
It is carried out via laparoscopy by placing an inflatable band around the upper part of the stomach, therefore limiting the stomach's capacity and increasing the feeling of satisfaction. Weight loss is achieved thanks to the consequential decrease of food intake.

| WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE OPERATION AND AFTERWARDS? |
The operation lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, although it may take longer.
The gastric band is a silicone ring with an internal elastic chamber that is filled up with a sterile fluid at least once within 6 weeks of the operation.
The band is inserted via small holes (4 holes 10 mm wide and 1 hole 18 mm wide) in the abdomen under a general anaesthetic. This method is known as a laparoscopy. The band is placed around the stomach that is divided in two cavities which are connected in the same way as a sand clock.
The band is designed to stay in place the rest of your life, although it is a reversible method and can be taken away if the patient so desires. The removal is done in the same way as the insertion.

| WHAT PROBLEMS MAY RESULT FROM THE LAPAROSCOPIC BAND? |
The problems associated to this product are the risk of the patient's intolerance of the medical products or methods used by the surgical team or of the insertion of foreign bodies in the patient's body.
It is probable the patient will suffer nausea the first days after the insertion. In this case it is very important to follow your doctor's orders. Such problems entail a minimum risk of death.
